What is Shravan (Sawan) Month?

Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and usually falls between mid-July and mid-August. The month derives its name from the Shravan Nakshatra, one of the prominent constellations during this period.

Why is Shravan Dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva?

According to Hindu scriptures, during the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Cosmic Ocean), a deadly poison known as Halahala emerged before the nectar of immortality.

To protect the universe, Bhagwan Shiva compassionately consumed the poison. Goddess Parvati prevented it from spreading by holding His throat, which turned blue, giving Shiva the name Neelkanth.

This divine act of sacrifice is closely associated with Shravan. Since then, devotees express gratitude by offering water, milk, bilva leaves, flowers, and prayers throughout the month.

The monsoon rains themselves are often seen as nature's continuous Abhishek upon Bhagwan Shiva.

• Ends: Saturday, 15 August 2026

South Indian (Amavasyant Calendar)

Sawan Somwar Dates 2026

Mondays during Shravan, known as Sawan Somwar, are considered especially auspicious for Shiva worship.

Many devotees observe fasting, perform Rudrabhishek, chant "Om Namah Shivaya", and visit Shiva temples on these sacred Mondays.
